ANCIENT INDIAN MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES

Hundreds of  ancient Indian management books are  available even today in  the printed form. Most important among them are  Bhagavath Gita, Yoga Vaasishta, Sukra neetisaara, Bhartruhari's upadesa sataka, Chanakya neetisaara, Bhishmopadesa, Bharatopadesa, Lakshamnopadesa, hundreds of Subhashitas, dialogues/advise given by the gurus /Rushies in   Ramayana  and Mahabharata…and so on. These  books and many other books of the same quality explain the  management messages  adoptable and adaptable for the  21st century.  Here, we  present  few  messages  from  Viduropadesa  in the same order  as it is given in his book. These messages  are given by Vidura, to Dhrutharaashtra, when the latter was terribly confused  whether to support his  son Duryodhana  who was practicing all adharma or  support Dharmaputra who was the embodiment of dharma. At the junction of this confusion  and self analyses  Dhrutha raashtra invited  his brother Vidura for consolation and for  a solution  to over come the problems. The messages given by Vidura to Dhrutharaashtra is known as  Viduropadesha, which is the part of Mahabharatha, the great  epic of Bharath.....

170. A leader who practices  adharmic  method  destroys his own prosperity by doing  so.

171.  The manager should practice all the good precedence  followed  by the  predecessors .

172. He should see that  the progress and prosperity attain steadily  and systematically  within the specified time .

182. A metal which bends easily need not be heated  and beaten , like that  a manager who accommodates and adjusts  will not face troubles.

183. The branches of the tress  carrying  fruits when bends automatically , never face problems from the fruit pluckers, where as  other trees when stands erect without binding  suffers problems, like that  a leader should give  good to others  without creating problems.

184. A great and wise man should always bow his head and extent helping hands  to  the poor and needy for helping them, this should be learned from the above  examples.

190. By serving anything with proper measurements they get protected, by proper exercises the health of the  horses  get  protected,  and by taking care of the cows, they  get protected……so do always  the needful for the protection and preservation all the good things.

191. Even if the  clan /family of  a fellow who practices  adharma  is  great, that fellow will never become great.

192. Even if   borne in a low family,  if one has dharmic principles , he will become  noble and respectable.

193.  The person who always think about others' money, beauty, power, quality, luck, happiness, royal behavior and worry about them, that is   dangerous and  incurable  disease . 194.  Those who are not doing what they can do should be kept away from us.

195. Those who are  trying to do the impossible things  should also be treated in the  same way.

196.  Those who disclose all the details/secrets  before achieving the goal should also be dealt with carefully.

197.  The   common men become crazy due to  the  ego generated due to high level of knowledge, money and power . But these three produce  humility and simplicity in  scholars/ noble men.

198.  Due to some situation or by compulsion, if good men request something from the bad men, then the latter start thinking that they are also good.

199.  The common men,  good men, bad men  all have to depend upon the good men only.

200. Those who have dressed  in costly apparel will shine in the group, those who have enough money  will  enjoy life, those who have  a vehicle will conquer the   path/ roads easily  and   those who are  noble in nature will conquer all the above…

221. without knowing what is the  actual  joyous  mission and what is not, many people managers  practice many negatives and  suffer a lot, in their life.

222. Without knowing the dharmic life  and without practicing the purushaarthaas, they destroy themselves.

223. Even a rich man may be the lord of many things, but if he cannot become the lord of his own  sensory organs, he will destroy whatever he has earned.

224. Every manager  should know about  himself first.

225. The manager should control his wisdom, his thoughts, his actions  and  should enrich everyday .

226. Every manager should know that   his closest relative is he  himself and  his closest  enemy is also  himself.

227. Over desires and  anger  can  destroy  everything  like a big fish can  destroy  the net within which the fish gets trapped.

228.  The manager who does hard work  through the dharmic pathway  and earns  money and reputation, that  manager only can live a happy and fruitful life.

229. Every manager should  first conquer his  own enemies  within himself like ego, anger, fear, arrogance,..

230 After conquering   the internal enemies he should conquer  the external enemies  to achieve great things in the life, otherwise  he will fail internally and externally

231. Many great men  got  trapped into many problems due to their  slavery  for  the  worldly    enjoyments/ attractions.

232. Many kings have destroyed themselves   due to their slavery towards the attractions  of sensory organs .

233. Never keep company with sinners.

234. Even great men will get destroyed with the company of bad people  and will have to suffer even for others sins/mistakes.

243. The strength of the women lies on their service mentality.

244. Strength of  scholars  and great men  is in  patience.

246.  Informing the message  in sweet words  can fetch multifacial benefits  for the user.

247. Use of  sharp words for  explaining the same  thing/giving the same message can create many problems too.

248.   The trees cut  using  swords or axes  can sprout again, but the injury created  by sharp words  can destroy the man which will never sprout again.

249. Many types of  arrows  hitting in the body can be  removed, but the sharp words once hit  cannot be removed at all.

250.   The arrows  shot as words once hit the most sensitive part of the human body   create deep injuries difficult to cure.

251.The pain created  from the wounds  produced by  sharp  words  will continue for ever.

252. So the scholars will never produce  wounds in others using the sharp words.

253.  Whomsoever you would like to conquer, try to conquer through wisdom by influencing  him intellectually

254. The  person who is  intellectually  affected  will withdraw from other  missions and confine  himself  in his work and that person  can be defeated  easily.

255. During bad times  even  wise men will behave  negatively attracting  many negatives.

256.  When facing many negatives, the people  generally feel that  negatives   are positives  and  they go behind negatives during crisis.

257.  Going to pilgrimage   and taking care of  the animals  are  equally  good, but the latter is more important, useful  and productive.

258. The place in heaven for an individual  remains  till he is remembered  on earth for his  great and good work.

259. When we do good,  people remember us and  as long as that memory remains in their mind, our position will be in the heaven.

260. So, do good till the last breath wherever we are.
