Bootrec.exe to fix booting issues

Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to troubleshoot and repair the following items in Windows Vista or Windows 7:

A master boot record (MBR)
A boot sector
A Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store

Note When you are troubleshooting startup issues by using the Windows RE, you should first try the Startup Repair option in the System Recovery Options dialog box. If the Startup Repair option does not resolve the issue, or if you must troubleshoot more steps manually, use the Bootrec.exe tool.

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:

Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then clickNext.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note To start the computer from the Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD, the computer must be configured to start from the DVD drive. For more information about how to configure the computer to start from the DVD drive, see the documentation that is included with the computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

Bootrec.exe options

The Bootrec.exe tool supports the following options. Use the option that is appropriate for your situation.

Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd

/FixMbr

The /FixMbr option writes a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-compatible MBR to the system partition. This option does not overwrite the existing partition table. Use this option when you must resolve MBR corruption issues, or when you have to remove non-standard code from the MBR.

/FixBoot

The /FixBoot option writes a new boot sector to the system partition by using a boot sector that is compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7. Use this option if one of the following conditions is true:

The boot sector has been replaced with a non-standard Windows Vista or Windows 7 boot sector.
The boot sector is damaged.
An earlier Windows operating system has been installed after Windows Vista or Windows 7 was installed. In this scenario, the computer starts by using Windows NT Loader (NTLDR) instead of Windows Boot Manager (Bootmgr.exe).

/ScanOs

The /ScanOs option scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7. Additionally, this option displays the entries that are currently not in the BCD store. Use this option when there are Windows Vista or Windows 7 installations that the Boot Manager menu does not list.

/RebuildBcd

The /RebuildBcd option scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the BCD store. Use this option when you must completely rebuild the BCD.

Adding the Windows Recovery Console as a startup option

If your computer starts Windows, you can add the Windows XP Recovery Console as a startup option from the Windows environment. To install the Recovery Console as a startup option, follow these steps:

With Windows running, insert the Windows CD into your CD drive.
Click Start and clickRun.
Type the following commands (where X: is the CD Drive letter), and then press ENTERon your keyboard.
X:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Note There is a space before /cmdcons.
Click OK and follow the instructions to finish Setup.

Note This adds the Windows Recovery Console to the Windows Startup folder.
Restart your computer and select the Recovery Console option from the list of available operating systems.

Restrictions and limitations of the Recovery Console

When you use the Windows Recovery Console, you can use only the following items:

The root folder
The %SystemRoot% folder and the subfolders of the Windows installation that you are currently logged on to
The Cmdcons folder
The removable media drives such as the CD drive or the DVD drive

Note If you try to access other folders, you may receive an "Access Denied" error message. This does not necessarily mean that data that is contained in those folders is lost or corrupted. It only means that the folder is unavailable while you are running the Windows Recovery Console. Also, when you are using the Windows Recovery Console, you cannot copy a file from the local hard disk to a floppy disk. However, you can copy a file from a floppy disk or from a CD-ROM to a hard disk, and you can copy a file from one hard disk to another hard disk.

Using the Command Console within Windows Recovery Console

The Recovery Console gives you limited access to the NTFS file system, FAT, and FAT32 volumes. Recovery Console prevents the familiar Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) from loading in order to repair and recover Windows functionality.

After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message:

Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type EXIT to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to ?

(To cancel, press ENTER)

Enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation. In this example, you would press 1. Then, Windows prompts you to enter the Administrator account password.

Note If you use an incorrect password three times, the Windows Recovery Console closes. Also, if the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database is missing or damaged, you cannot use the Windows Recovery Console because you cannot be authenticated correctly. After you enter your password and the Windows Recovery Console starts, type Exit to restart the computer.

Available commands within Windows Recovery Console

The following commands are available within the Windows Recovery Console. The commands are not case-sensitive.

Warning Some of these commands can make your system inoperable. Read the whole explanation of any command before you enter it onto the command line. Seek the advice of a support professional if you have any questions or concerns about a particular command.

HELP

Use the help command to list all the following supported commands:

attrib del fixboot more set
batch delete fixmbr mkdir systemroot
bootcfg dir format more type
cd disable help net
chdir diskpart listsvc rd

copy expand md rmdir

ATTRIB

Use the attrib command together with one or more of the following parameters to change the attributes of a file or a folder:

-R

H Hidden file attribute

C Compressed file attribute

You must set or clear at least one attribute.

To view attributes, use the dir command.

BATCH

batch inputfile [outputfile]

Use this command to run commands that are specified in a text file. In the command syntax,inputfile specifies the text file that contains the list of commands to be run, and outputfilespecifies the file that contains the output of the specified commands. If you do not specify an output file, the output appears on the screen.

BOOTCFG

Use this command for boot configuration and recovery. This command has the following options:

bootcfg /add

bootcfg /rebuild

bootcfg /scan

bootcfg /list

bootcfg /disableredirect

bootcfg /redirect [portbaudrate] | [useBiosSettings]

Examples:

bootcfg /redirect com1 115200

bootcfg /redirect useBiosSettings

You can use the following options:

/add Adds a Windows installation to the boot menu list.

/rebuild Iterates through all Windows installations so that you can specify which installations to add.

/scan Scans all disks for Windows installations and displays the results so that you can specify which installations to add.

/default Sets the default boot entry.

/list Lists the entries already in the boot menu list.

/disableredirect Disables redirection in the boot loader.

/redirect Enables redirection in the boot loader, with the specified configuration.

CD and CHDIR

Use the cd and chdir commands to change to a different folder. For example, you can use the following commands:

Type cd .. to change to the parent folder.

Type cd drive: to display the current folder in the specified drive.

Type cd without parameters to display the current drive and folder.

The chdir command treats spaces as delimiters. Because of this, you must put quotation marks ("") around a folder name that contains a space.The following is an example:

cd "\windows\profiles\username\programs\start menu"

The chdir command works only in the system folders of the current installation of Windows, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources.

CHKDSK

chkdsk drive /p /r

The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it. The command also marks any bad sectors and it recovers readable information.

You can use the following options:

/p Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.

/r Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Note If you specify the /r option, the /p option is implied. When you specify the chkdskcommand without arguments, the command checks the current drive with no options in effect.

When you run the chkdsk command, you must use the Autochk.exe file. CHKDSK automatically locates this file in the startup folder. If the Command Console was preinstalled, the startup folder is typically the Cmdcons folder. If CHKDSK cannot find Autochk.exe in the startup folder, CHKDSK tries to locate the Windows installation disc. If it cannot find the installation media, CHKDSK prompts you for the location of the Autochk.exe file.

CLS

Use this command to clear the screen.

COPY

copy source destination

Use this command to copy a file. In the command syntax, source specifies the file to copy anddestination specifies the folder or file name for the new file. You cannot use wildcard characters indicated by an asterisk (*), and you cannot copy a folder. If you copy a compressed file from the Windows installation disc, the file is automatically decompressed while it is copied.

The source of the file can be removable media, any folder in the system folders of the current Windows installation, the root of any drive, the local installation sources, or the Cmdcons folder.

If destination is unspecified, the default destination is the current folder. If the file already exists, you are prompted whether you want the copied file to overwrite the existing file. The destination cannot be removable media.

DEL and DELETE

del drive: path filename

delete drive: path filename

Use this command to delete a file. In the command syntax, drive: path filename specifies the file that you want to delete. The delete command works only in the system folders of the current Windows installation, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources. The delete command does not accept wildcard characters.

DIR

dir drive: path filename

Use this command to display a list of files and subfolders in a folder. In the command syntax,drive: path filename specifies the drive, folder, and files to list. The dir command lists all files, including hidden files and system files. Files can have the following attributes:

D Directory

H Hidden file

S System file

E Encrypted

R Read-only file

A Files ready for archiving

C Compressed

P Reparse point

The dir command works only in the system folders of the current Windows installation, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources.

DISABLE

disable servicename

Use this command to disable a Windows system service or a driver. In the command syntax,servicename specifies the name of the service or driver that you want to disable.

Use the listsvc command to display all services or drivers that are eligible to be disabled. Thedisable command prints the old start type of the service before resetting the start type to SERVICE_DISABLED. Record the old start type if you must enable the service again.

The disable command displays the following start_type values:

SERVICE_DISABLED

SERVICE_BOOT_START

SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

SERVICE_AUTO_START

SERVICE_DEMAND_START

DISKPART

diskpart /add/deletedevice_name drive_name partition_name size

Use this command to manage the partitions on your hard disk volumes. You can use the following options:

/add Creates a new partition.

/delete Deletes an existing partition.

device_name The name of the device that is used to create a new partition.

drive_name A drive-letter-based name, for example D:.

partition_name The partition-based name for deleting an existing partition.

size The size of the new partition in megabytes.

You can determine the device name from the output of the MAP command, for example, \Device\HardDisk0. You can use the partition name instead of the drive name argument, for example, \Device\HardDisk0\Partition1. If you use no arguments, a user interface for managing your partitions appears.

Warning If you use this command on a disk that has a dynamic disk configuration, you may damage the partition table. Do not modify the structure of dynamic disks unless you are using the Disk Management tool.

ENABLE

enable servicename start_type

You can use the enable command to enable a Windows system service or a driver.

Use the listsvc command to display all eligible services or drivers to enable. The enablecommand prints the old start type of the service before it is reset to the new value. It is a good idea to note the old value, in case you have to restore the start type of the service.

Valid options for start_type are as follows:

SERVICE_BOOT_START

SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

SERVICE_AUTO_START

SERVICE_DEMAND_START

If you do not specify a new start type, the enable command prints the old start type for you.

EXIT

Use the exit command to exit the Recovery Console and restart your computer.

EXPAND

expand source [/F:filespec] [destination] [/y]

expand source [/F:filespec] /D

Use this command to expand a file. In the command syntax, source specifies the name of the file to be expanded and destination specifies the folder for the new file. If you do not specify a destination, the command uses the current folder by default. You cannot include wildcard characters.

You can use the following options:

/y Do not prompt before overwriting an existing file.

/f:filespec Identifies the files to be expanded.

/d Do not expand; display only a directory of the files in the source.

If the source contains more than one file, you must use the /f:filespec parameter to find the specific files to be expanded. You can include wildcard characters.

The destination can be any folder in the system folders of the current Windows installation, in the root of the drive, in the local installation sources, or in the Cmdcons folder. The destination cannot be removable media, and the destination file cannot be read-only. Use the attribcommand to remove the read-only attribute.

Unless you use the /y option, the expand command prompts you if the destination file already exists.

FIXBOOT

fixboot drive name:

Use this command to write the new Windows boot sector code on the system partition. In the command syntax, drive name is the drive letter where the boot sector will be written. This command fixes damage in the Windows boot sector. This command overrides the default setting, which writes to the system boot partition. The fixboot command is supported only on x86-based computers.

FIXMBR

fixmbr device name

Use this command to repair the MBR of the boot partition. In the command syntax, device name is an optional device name that specifies the device that requires a new MBR. Use this command if a virus has damaged the MBR and Windows cannot start.

Warning This command can damage your partition tables if a virus is present or if a hardware problem exists. If you use this command, you may create inaccessible partitions. We recommend that you run antivirus software before you use this command.

You can obtain the device name from the output of the map command. If you do not specify a device name, the MBR of the boot device is repaired, for example:

fixmbr \device\harddisk2

If the fixmbr command detects an invalid or non-standard partition table signature, fixmbrcommand prompts you for permission before it rewrites the MBR. The fixmbr command is supported only on x86-based computers.

FORMAT

format drive: /Q /FS:file-system

Use this command to format the specified drive to the specified file system. In the command syntax, /Q performs a quick format of the drive, drive is the drive letter of the partition to format, and /FS:file-system specifies the type of file system to use such as FAT, FAT32, or NTFS. If you do not specify a file system, the existing file system format is used if it is available.

LISTSVC

The listsvc command lists all available services, drivers, and their start types for the current Windows installation. This command is useful together with the disable and enablecommands.

The list is extracted from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\System hive. If the System hive is damaged or missing, the results are unpredictable.

LOGON

logon

The logon command lists all detected installations of Windows and then requests the local administrator password for the copy of Windows that you want to log on to. If your first three tries to log on fail, the console closes, and your computer restarts.

MAP

map arc

Use this command to list drive letters, file system types, partition sizes, and mappings to physical devices. In the command syntax, the arc parameter tells the map command to use ARC paths instead of Windows Device paths.

MD and MKDIR

The md and mkdir commands create new folders. Wildcard characters are not supported. Themkdir command works only in the system folders of the current installation of Windows, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources.

MORE

more filename

Use this command to display a text file to the screen.

NET

Although the Help file states otherwise, the net command is not usable from the Recovery Console. The protocols stack is not loaded for the Recovery Console. Therefore, there is no networking function available.

RD and RMDIR

Use rd and rmdir commands to delete a folder. These commands work only in the system folders of the current Windows installation, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources.

REN and RENAME

Use the ren and rename commands to rename a file.

Note You cannot specify a new drive or path for the renamed file. These commands work only in the system folders of the current Windows installation, in removable media, in the root folder of any hard disk partition, or in the local installation sources.

SET

You can use the set to display or modify four environment options.

AllowWildCards = FALSE AllowAllPaths = FALSE AllowRemovableMedia = FALSE NoCopyPrompt = FALSE

NTLDR is missing?

From a newsgroup post by late Mr.Alex Nichol, Microsoft MVP:

The MBR code hands the boot on to the Active partition; the boot code in

that loads NTLDR. There are two cases:

"NTLDR not found" at all may arise because the incorrect partition has been

set as active. This can happen if you have a dual boot and have messed with

the files in that partition that boot; this is not the XP one, or have

shifted the boot to the XP partition which does not have NTLDR in it.

"NTLDR damaged" means what it says, the file is there but not working.

Either way, if you have a proper retail type XP CD, not some maker's

recovery disk:

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of

Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is

blank, and TAB over. Assuming this sees the CD as D (likely) give:

COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\

COPY D:\i386\ntdetect C:\

(a file that may also be missing)

then rebuild the boot configuration boot.ini file by

Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini

(if not found skip the next line)

DEL C:\boot.ini

BootCfg /Rebuild

10 Mistakes That Start-Up Entrepreneurs Make

When it comes to starting a successful business, there's no surefire playbook that contains the winning game plan.

On the other hand, there are about as many mistakes to be made as there are entrepreneurs to make them.

Recently, after a work-out at the gym with my trainer -- an attractive young woman who's also a dancer/actor -- she told me about a web series that she's producing and starring in together with a few friends. While the series has gained a large following online, she and her friends have not yet incorporated their venture, drafted an operating agreement, trademarked the show's name or done any of the other things that businesses typically do to protect their intellectual property and divvy up the owners' share of the company. While none of this may be a problem now, I told her, just wait until the show hits it big and everybody hires a lawyer.

Here, in my experience, are the top 10 mistakes that entrepreneurs make when starting a company:

1. Going it alone. It's difficult to build a scalable business if you're the only person involved. True, a solo public relations, web design or consulting firm may require little capital to start, and the price of hiring even one administrative assistant, sales representative or entry-level employee can eat up a big chunk of your profits. The solution: Make sure there's enough margin in your pricing to enable you to bring in other people. Clients generally don't mind outsourcing as long as they can still get face time with you, the skilled professional who's managing the project.

2. Asking too many people for advice. It's always good to get input from experts, especially experienced entrepreneurs who've built and sold successful companies in your industry. But getting too many people's opinions can delay your decision so long that your company never gets out of the starting gate. The answer: Assemble a solid advisory board that you can tap on a regular basis but run the day-to-day yourself. Says Elyissia Wassung, chief executive of 2 Chicks With Chocolate Inc., a Matawan, N.J., chocolate company, "Pull in your [advisory] team for bi-weekly or, at the very least, monthly conference calls. You'll wish you did it sooner!"

3. Spending too much time on product development, not enough on sales. While it's hard to build a great company without a great product, entrepreneurs who spend too much time tinkering may lose customers to a competitor with a stronger sales organization. "I call [this misstep] the 'Field of Dreams' of entrepreneurship. If you build it, they will buy it," says Sanjyot Dunung, CEO of Atma Global, Inc., a New York software publisher, who has made this mistake in her own business. "If you don't keep one eye firmly focused on sales, you'll likely run out of money and energy before you can successfully get your product to market."

4. Targeting too small a market. It's tempting to try to corner a niche, but your company's growth will quickly hit a wall if the market you're targeting is too tiny. Think about all the high school basketball stars who dream of playing in the NBA. Because there are only 30 teams and each team employs only a handful of players, the chances that your son will become the next Michael Jordan are pretty slim. The solution: Pick a bigger market that gives you the chance to grab a slice of the pie even if your company remains a smaller player.

5. Entering a market with no distribution partner. It's easier to break into a market if there's already a network of agents, brokers, manufacturers' reps and other third-party resellers ready, willing and able to sell your product into existing distribution channels. Fashion, food, media and other major industries work this way; others are not so lucky. That's why service businesses like public relations firms, yoga studios and pet-grooming companies often struggle to survive, alternating between feast and famine. The solution: Make a list of potential referral sources before you start your business and ask them if they'd be willing to send business your way.

6. Overpaying for customers. Spending big on advertising may bring in lots of customers, but it's a money-losing strategy if your company can't turn those dollars into lifetime customer value. A magazine or website that spends $500 worth of advertising to acquire a customer who pays $20 a month and cancels his or her subscription at the end of the year is simply pouring money down the drain. The solution: Test, measure, then test again. Once you've done enough testing to figure out how to make more money selling products and services to your customers than you spend acquiring those customers in the first place, roll out a major marketing campaign.

7. Raising too little capital. Many start-ups assume that all they need is enough money to rent space, buy equipment, stock inventory and drive customers through the door. What they often forget is that they also need capital to pay for salaries, utilities, insurance and other overhead expenses until their company starts turning a profit. Unless you're running the kind of business where everybody's working for sweat equity and deferring compensation, you'll need to raise enough money to tide you over until your revenues can cover your expenses and generate positive cash flow. The solution: Calculate your start-up costs before you open your doors, not afterwards.

8. Raising too much capital. Believe it or not, raising too much money can be a problem, too. Over-funded companies tend to get big and bloated, hiring too many people too soon and wasting valuable resources on trade show booths, parties, image ads and other frills. When the money runs out and investors lose patience (which is what happened 10 years ago when the dot-com market melted down), start-ups that frittered away their cash will have to close their doors. No matter how much money you raise at the outset, remember to bank some for a rainy day.

9. Not having a business plan. While not every company needs a formal business plan, a start-up that requires significant capital to grow and more than a year to turn a profit should map out how much time and money it's going to take to get to its destination. This means thinking through the key metrics that make your business tick and building a model to spin off three years of sales, profits and cash-flow projections. "I wasted 10 years [fooling around] thinking like an artist and not a business person," says Louis Piscione, president of Avanti Media Group, a New Jersey company that produces videos for corporate and private events. "I learned that you have to put some of your creative genius toward a business plan that forecasts and sets goals for growth and success."

10. Over-thinking your business plan. While many entrepreneurs I've met engage in seat-of-the-pants decision-making and fail to do their homework, other entrepreneurs are afraid to pull the trigger until they're 100% certain that their plan will succeed. One lawyer I worked with several years ago was so skittish about leaving his six-figure job to launch his business that he never met with a single bank or investor who might have funded his company. The truth is that a business plan is not a crystal ball that can predict the future. At a certain point, you have to close your eyes and take the leap of faith.

Despite the many books and articles that have been written about entrepreneurship, it's just not possible to start a company without making a few mistakes along the way. Just try to avoid making any mistake so large that your company can't get back on its feet to fight another day.

Touch-screen monitors have become more and more commonplace as their price has steadily dropped over the past decade. There are three basic systems that are used to recognize a person's touch:

Resistive
Capacitive
Surface acoustic wave

In the capacitive system, a layer that stores electrical charge is placed on the glass panel of the monitor. When a user touches the monitor with his or her finger, some of the charge is transferred to the user, so the charge on the capacitive layer decreases. This decrease is measured in circuits located at each corner of the monitor. The computer calculates, from the relative differences in charge at each corner, exactly where the touch event took place and then relays that information to the touch-screen driver software. One advantage that the capacitive system has over the resistive system is that it transmits almost 90 percent of the light from the monitor, whereas the resistive system only transmits about 75 percent. This gives the capacitive system a much clearer picture than the resistive system.

The resistive system consists of a normal glass panel that is covered with a conductive and a resistive metallic layer. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers while the monitor is operational. When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact in that exact spot. The change in the electrical field is noted and the coordinates of the point of contact are calculated by the computer. Once the coordinates are known, a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, much as a computer mouse driver translates a mouse's movements into a click or a drag.

Resistive screen can be more powerful, useful, responsive and modern if well done.

On the monitor of a surface acoustic wave system, two transducers (one receiving and one sending) are placed along the x and y axes of the monitor's glass plate. Also placed on the glass are reflectors -- they reflect an electrical signal sent from one transducer to the other. The receiving transducer is able to tell if the wave has been disturbed by a touch event at any instant, and can locate it accordingly. The wave setup has no metallic layers on the screen, allowing for 100-percent light throughput and perfect image clarity. This makes the surface acoustic wave system best for displaying detailed graphics (both other systems have significant degradation in clarity).
Another area in which the systems differ is in which stimuli will register as a touch event. A resistive system registers a touch as long as the two layers make contact, which means that it doesn't matter if you touch it with your finger or a rubber ball. A capacitive system, on the other hand, must have a conductive input, usually your finger, in order to register a touch. The surface acoustic wave system works much like the resistive system, allowing a touch with almost any object -- except hard and small objects like a pen tip.
As far as price, the resistive system is the cheapest; its clarity is the lowest of the three, and its layers can be damaged by sharp objects. The surface acoustic wave setup is usually the most expensive.

Is the hard disk not there at all, or is it listed as not available? If not available, this could be because of space constraints, and you need to access the drive by putting it into target mode, and accessing it like a hard drive through the file wire port. With this you need to pull stuff off to make room for the new OS installation. You start target mode by holding "t" down during startup.

what are the chances of getting TWO lemons.

1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4 I think. It's not really a lemon if it's just a broken trackpad. That term is more for computers that are dead or keep breaking.

What can be done by using any of the toolbar options at the top of the opening screen, and with a keyboard. I can't "click" or "tap" anything, so I have to resort to arrow keys and the Return key.

ctrl-F7 (you may have to use ctrl-fn-F7 on the laptop) turns on full keyboard access. ctrl-F2 selects the Apple menu and ctrl-F8 does the menus on the right. You can use the tab key and arrows for navigation and return or sometimes space bar for selection. command-tab can switch apps. Expose can select windows.

FTP: File Transfer Protocol

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to copy a file from one host to another over a TCP/IP-based network, such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server applications which solves the problem of different end host configurations (i.e. Operating System, file names). FTP is used with user-based password authentication.

NAT traversal

The representation of the IP addresses and port numbers in the PORT command and PASV reply poses a challenge to FTP in traversing Network address translators (NAT). The NAT device must alter these values, so that they contain the IP address of the NAT-ed client, and a port chosen by the NAT device for the data connection. The new address and port will probably differ in length in their decimal representation from the original address and port. Such translation is not usually performed in most NAT devices, but special application layer gateways exist for this purpose.

FTP over SSH (not SFTP)

FTP over SSH (not SFTP) refers to the practice of tunneling a normal FTP session over an SSH connection.

Because FTP uses multiple TCP connections (unusual for a TCP/IP protocol that is still in use), it is particularly difficult to tunnel over SSH. With many SSH clients, attempting to set up a tunnel for the control channel (the initial client-to-server connection on port 21) will protect only that channel; when data is transferred, the FTP software at either end will set up new TCP connections (data channels) which will bypass the SSH connection, and thus have no confidentiality, integrity protection, etc.

Otherwise, it is necessary for the SSH client software to have specific knowledge of the FTP protocol, and monitor and rewrite FTP control channel messages and autonomously open new forwardings for FTP data channels. Version 3 of SSH Communications Security's software suite, the GPL licensed FONC,and Co:Z FTPSSH Proxy are three software packages that support this mode.

FTP over SSH is sometimes referred to as secure FTP; this should not be confused with other methods of securing FTP, such as with SSL/TLS (FTPS). What is a MySQL database?

Today, modern web applications like Joomla, Moodle and 4images, are dynamic. They are designed to store articles, posts, stories, pictures, movies and other content. To keep all that data organized and to have it displayed faster, those applications are using MySQL databases. The MySQL database consists of tables and every MySQL table stores specific information for the application. To better understand how the MySQL database stores your site's data let's take a look at a common Joomla database:

As you can see, Joomla keeps the database information separated in many tables. The users' data information (such as names, login credentials and passwords) is kept in the table jos_users and the content data (articles, news, posts) is in jos_content. The 'jos_' part of the database table's name is called prefix and is used to determine the application which is using the table. Out of the above, some parameters which are optional for some handsets like Proxies and Port No. These depend upon the handset capability itself. In GPRS settings, the profile name or the connection name can be any thing. Normally for WAP, we keep IdeaFreshGPRS and for MMS, it is IDEA_MMS. These GPRS settings can be at different places in different handsets e.g. in Nokia, this is at Services, in Samsung, this is at FunBox, in Sony Ericsson, in Data Connection/Wap Browing..and so on. And the MMS settings are normally at the Multimedia Message Settings part. So you need to find the proper place to feed in the right settings at right place.

To access wireless Internet you require

A GPRS handset (There are many GPRS handsets available in the market today).
Subscription to IDEA services.
Laptop or PDA or any other device you want wireless connectivity to.
Bluetooth/data cable/Infrared through which you can achieve connectivity between you handset and the other device.

Steps to configure Belkin Wireless N router

Before accessing the web based setup page connect your router to the computer as shown in the figure.

Now unplug the power cable from the modem. Let the Belking router and the computer powered on. Steps to setup Belking Router by accessing the steup page are:

1. Access Belkin setup page

To access Belkin's web based setup page type 192.168.2.1 on the address bar of the browser.

The default IP address of Belkin Wireless N router F5D8233-4 is 192.168.2.1

2. Enter the password while it prompts

By default there is no password set for the router and you just simply click submit button to log on to router setup page.

3. Setup the connection type ( Internet WAN)

Click on Internet WAN and select the connection type you want.

If you select the Dynamic IP option the window will be like this.

4. Change the LAN settings

You can change the router IP address and you can enable or disable the DHCP function on the Belkin router using this window.

5. Setup Wireless feature

To edit the wireless settings click on Wireless tab in the setup page. You can edit the Wireless network name and wireless channel here.

6. Enable Wireless Security

To enable wireless security on Belkin router click on security under wireless tab.

How To: Synchronize files on two computers

You have a laptop and a desktop, and you want to synchronize your documents so that both computers have the latest versions of all your files. Or you have a Flash memory drive where you keep copies of the files you're working on, and you want to synchronize the contents of the My Documents folder with that. Perhaps you have an external hard drive that you use as a mirror disk, for emergency backup, and you want to ensure that the files it holds are all up to date. These are all common tasks, but Windows provides no easy way to accomplish them.

Drag and drop

One way you could try to do this is simply to copy the files from one location to another using drag and drop. This is simple and requires no software that you're unfamiliar with, but it's error prone. It's all too easy to overwrite a file with an older version, losing all the changes you've made. It's also slow, especially when synchronizing files on two computers are connected using a network, because if you try to copy a block of files, Windows will copy all the files you selected, not just those that have changed and need updating.

Using XCOPY

The Windows command line utility XCOPY has options that can be used to copy only files that are newer than those already in the destination folder. You can create a batch file to simplify this procedure.

Using Notepad, create a file containing the following two lines:

XCOPY "%1" "%2" /D /I %3
XCOPY "%2" "%1" /D /I %3

and save it in your Windows folder as SYNC.CMD. (This is for Windows 2000 or XP. If you are using Windows 95, 98 or Me, replace XCOPY with XCOPY32 and save the file as SYNC.BAT.)

To use the batch file, open a command prompt and type SYNC followed by the paths of the two folders you want to synchronize, each in quotes. If you want to synchronize subfolders as well, add /S to the command line before pressing Enter. For example, suppose your project is kept in a folder called "My Project" on both your local PC and one with a network name of "DELL". To synchronize this folder, including any subfolders, type the command:

SYNC "C:\My Project" "\\DELL\My Project" /S

We recommend that you test this on something unimportant before trying it on valuable work files. Note that the two-line batch file has no "idiot-proofing", so it will happily try to synchronize entire hard disks if you tell it to! This method works, but it gets tiresome having to type in the paths of the two folders.

Windows Briefcase

Most versions of Windows have a little-known tool called Briefcase that is intended to facilitate transferring files between work and home. One of the reasons it's little known is that it is not really a lot of use. It can't be used to synchronize files or folders across a network, but you can use it to create copies of files that can be transferred to another computer across a network, and then used to update the originals when they are transferred back. You can also create a Briefcase on a floppy disk or Flash drive, and then transfer it manually between computers.

Search your computer for a file called "(your AOL screen name).abi".
If your screen name is "myscreenname", for example, search for a file called "myscreenname.abi".
You should find it in a folder called organize. A typical location is "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize". You can go to this folder directly, too.
Go up one directory, to the C_America Online 9.0 folder.
For other versions of AOL, the folder name may be different. In any case, go up one directory from the organize folder.
Highlight the organize folder.
Select Edit | Copy from the menu of the Explorer window.
Open the desired backup location (a CD or DVD, another hard disk, a network location or a USB stick, for example) in Explorer.
Select Edit | Paste from the menu.

Install win7 from a Flash drive

This method has worked for me many times and for many different people. It

is an incredibly easy process, especially if you consider the pain it is to

install XP from a flash drive.... Follow the steps 1-5:

Ok, here we go, follow closely.

1. Format the flash drive (at least a 4GB) as NTFS, NOT FAT32! Important!

2. Put the Vista disk in the drive, and open the command line with

Administrator privileges.

3. Enter the text below directly into the command line, replacing the first

drive letter with the drive letter of the Vista DVD, and the second drive

letter with the letter of the flash drive.

xcopy D: E: /e /h

The "D:" being your optical drive where the Vista DVD is, and the "E:" being

the flash drive. Change the letters to suit your setup. This might take

awhile as it copies all the files on the Vista DVD to the flash drive. Just

doing this from the explorer misses some hidden files.

4. Once that is finished, open a new command line window and enter the flash

drive's directory. Do this by entering the drive letter of the flash drive.

If the flash drive is drive E, just enter:

cd boot

You are now in the boot directory.

5. Now to run the bootsect command that makes the flash drive bootable.

Enter the following, and just like before, replace the E: with the drive

letter of the flash drive.

If you accidentally put the wrong drive letter there, you could be in

trouble so pay attention!

You will get what looks to be an error, but ignore that. All you are

interested in is if it says: Bootcode was successfully updated on all target

volumes.

If you know how to boot from a USB device you are all set, if not, consult

you're mobo's documentation.

I tried this method many times on many different PC's with a FAT32 formatted

flash drive, but the install would always fail.

I am completely open to any more suggestions.

Yes if you have a Firewire cable, the G5 can be used as a Firewire DVD reader.

Put the MB Install DVD in the G5, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the G5 holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the MB holding the Option key down, eventually the MB's Install Disk will show as a Boot Option.

Is the hard disk not there at all, or is it listed as not available? If not available, this could be because of space constraints, and you need to access the drive by putting it into target mode, and accessing it like a hard drive through the file wire port. With this you need to pull stuff off to make room for the new OS installation. You start target mode by holding "t" down during startup.

what are the chances of getting TWO lemons.

1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4 I think. It's not really a lemon if it's just a broken trackpad. That term is more for computers that are dead or keep breaking.

What can be done by using any of the toolbar options at the top of the opening screen, and with a keyboard. I can't "click" or "tap" anything, so I have to resort to arrow keys and the Return key.

ctrl-F7 (you may have to use ctrl-fn-F7 on the laptop) turns on full keyboard access. ctrl-F2 selects the Apple menu and ctrl-F8 does the menus on the right. If you have a list of contacts contained in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, it will not be readily accessible to Microsoft Outlook or to other programs that may access the Address Book. To overcome this obstacle, you can export and then import the list into Outlook by using the procedure in the "More Information" section of this article.

Exporting from Excel

If row 1 of your spreadsheet contains column descriptions, such as "Name," "E-mail Address," and so on, skip to step 3. If it does not, add one that does by right-clicking the 1 to the left of the first row, and then clicking Insert.
In the new blank cells at the top of each column, type a description for that column, such as "Name," "E-mail Address," "Company," "Phone Number," and so on.
On the File menu, click Save As.
Choose a folder to save to from the Save in drop-down list, type a name for the file, such as "Contacts," in the File name box, and in the Save as type drop-down list, click CSV (Comma delimited).
Make a note of the folder location, and then click SAVE.

Importing into Outlook

If you are importing into an existing Contacts folder, skip to step 3. To create a new folder in Outlook, click Folder List on the View menu, unless the Folder List is open already.
Right-click the Contacts folder, and then click New Folder, type a name for the new folder, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Import and Export, click Next, click Comma Separated Values (Windows), and then click Next.
If the file that is displayed is not the correct file, click Browse, browse to the folder noted in step 3, and then double-click the file to select it.
If you are importing into a new folder, the Options settings is irrelevant because there are no duplicates. If not, choose the most logical selection. Click Allow duplicates if you are not sure, and then click Next.
Click the Contacts folder, or other contacts-type folder that you have created, to import into, and then click Next.
If you are not sure that the column names in the first row of the spreadsheet will map correctly to the Outlook fields, click Map custom fields to verify them.

NOTE: If Map custom fields is unavailable, you have chosen a non-contact-type folder to import into. Click Back, and then choose the correct folder. If you are satisfied with the mapping, click OK to close the Map Custom Fields dialog box, and then click Finish.
